Hydrogen in motion: LIHYP Roadshow and 24H2 Challenge at Groningen Airport Eelde

On Friday 25 September, Groningen Airport Eelde will be all about hydrogen. The airport will be the Dutch destination of the LIHYP Roadshow and the starting point of the 24H2 Challenge, part of the Northern Hydrogen Days.

Together, the two events bring international cooperation, innovation and the practical application of hydrogen together at the airport.

LIHYP Roadshow

Groningen Airport Eelde is one of the pilot locations within the European LIHYP project, Linking Hydrogen Power Potentials. Partners from France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark work together within the project to develop regional hydrogen value chains and exchange knowledge and practical experience. Within LIHYP, Groningen Airport Eelde focuses on the potential application of hydrogen in and around airport operations.

The LIHYP Roadshow visits several European hydrogen pilots. On 25 September, the focus will be on Groningen Airport Eelde. Participants will learn more about developments at the airport and the results and insights generated by the project.

Start of the 24H2 Challenge

In the afternoon, the programme transitions into the 24H2 Challenge, which also marks the start of the Northern Hydrogen Days.

During the challenge, participants have 24 hours to travel through Europe in a hydrogen-powered car and collect as many points as possible. Along the way, they visit hydrogen hotspots and complete a range of challenges. In doing so, the event demonstrates how Europe’s hydrogen infrastructure is developing while connecting participants, companies and hydrogen projects across borders.

The 24H2 Challenge starts at Groningen Airport Eelde on Friday 25 September and finishes on Saturday 26 September.

Groningen Airport Eelde as a testing ground

The combination of the LIHYP Roadshow and the 24H2 Challenge fits Groningen Airport Eelde’s role as a testing ground for sustainable aviation and new energy systems. The airport is working on several sustainable energy solutions, including electrification, hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuels.

Within LIHYP, research is being carried out into the development of a local hydrogen ecosystem around the airport, ranging from production and distribution to applications on both the landside and airside.

The activities on 25 September bring together international knowledge, regional developments and practical hydrogen applications at Groningen Airport Eelde.
